Contagion: macroeconomic models with multiple equilibria

چکیده

Several concepts of contagion are distinguished. It is argued that models that allow only a single equilibrium conditional on the macroeconomic fundamentals are not adequate to capture all forms of contagion, hence it is useful to formulate macro models that admit multiple equilibria and self-fulfilling expectations. A simple balance of payments model is presented to illustrate that phenomenon, and some back-of-the-envelope calculations assess its relevance to the coincidence of emerging market crises in 1994–95 and in 1997.  1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. Default penalty as a selection mechanism among multiple equilibria

In spite of their importance in real economics, multiple equilibria in closed exchange and production-and-exchange economies are usually ignored in macroeconomic models. We argue that default and bankruptcy laws create conditions for a unique equilibrium. We report experimental evidence on the effectiveness of assigning default penalties on fiat money to resolve this multiplicity and select a s...

Evolutionary Algorithms in Macroeconomic Models

This paper provides a survey of the applications of evolutionary algorithms in macroeconomic models. Discussion is organized around the issues related to stability of equilibria, equilibrium selection, transitional dynamics, and the long-run evolutionary dynamics di erent from rational expectations equilibrium outcomes. The survey also discusses criteria that can be used to evaluate the perform...

Oligopoly with Capacity Constraints and Thresholds

Abstract   Extended Oligopoly models will be introduced and examined in which the firms might face capacity limits, thresholds for minimal and maximal moves, and antitrust thresholds in the case of partial cooperation. Similar situation occurs when there is an additional cost of output adjustment, which is discontinuous at zero due to set-up costs. In these cases the payoff functions of the...

Learning, convergence, and stability with multiple rational expectations equilibria*

For a linear model with multiple rational expectations equilibria (REE) we discuss the set of possible REE. Solutions include (i) locally unique minimal state variable solutions. taking an AR(I) form and (ii) continua of solutions which may depend on sunspots. We analyze the convergence of econometric learning to the different REE. There exist cases with more than one stable AR(l) solution. It ...

Journey into the unknown ? Economic consequences of factor market integration under increasing returns to scale

What are the dynamic consequences of comprehensive integration shocks? The answer to this question appears all but trivial. We set up a dynamic macroeconomic model of a small open economy where both capital and labor are mobile and there are increasing returns to scale at the aggregate level. The model features multiple equilibria as well as (local and global) indeterminacy. Hence, expectations...
